- This is a drum I decided to build as a challenge and as a learning experience. Double digit ply drums fall into the same cataegory as heavy metal shells - and the myths that go with that designation. There are those who think heavy / multi ply drums generate more volume. That is a myth. When you build a 30+ ply drum what you have is effectively a 13" snare drum as you have taken up that much more space inside the drum. Thus when you apply high tension such a drum and hit it, you get a piercing sound - not any louder, just a drum with a high end spike that creates the illusion of more volume.
