- This is an excellent example of a Classic bronze snare drum. The finish is the #8 which is polished / unlacquered - a living finish that will patina with age and handling (although like any polished metal you can maintain the finish with regular cleaning). I am frequently asked about the sonic differences between copper and bronze. The answer is about a 2" piece of tape across the head. By this I mean copper is - as a shell - acoustically still born. When you hold a copper shell and strike it, it produces a non-resonant 'clank'. A bronze shell in the same situation produces a very similar fundamental pitch (no higher or lower) however, the shell rings out as clearly as a stainless or titanium shell. Thus a bronze drum provides all of the characteristics of a copper drum, however the tone and decay you would want is in fact there, unlike the dry, flat sound of copper. I believe that if you are interested in a copper snare, buy the bronze and slap a piece of tape over the head and you'll have the sound of a copper snare drum. You can control resonance in a drum, but you CANNOT add it if it's not there.
