Details, details...
Self discussion is something I find both boring and difficult. As I have yet to understand myself, it is also very confusing! I have no idea how my artistic process works or where my ideas originate, although I have always been moved and inspired by the work of Jean Loupe Sieff and Helmut Newton, both of whom I consider my mentors. As for my images, well, I am humbled by thier ability to articulate things so much better than myself. (it was only occasionally my intention to have them say anything at all!)
Read me, feed me...
One of my main reasons for having a web page is to make these images accessible with the intention of opening dialogue and getting some feedback. Your questions, comments and criticisms are welcome and appreciated. If you have any PUBLISHING ideas or suggestions don't hestitate. I would very much like to do a book. And of course I would love to find a patron.
Almost all of these images are available for purchase. They are printed on various grades and types of fibre base paper. Each print is a custom print. I don't do "runs". No two prints will ever be the same (although very close), each a series unto itself. Therefore you will not find an edition or series number on your print. What you will find however, is my signature and the date that it was printed. I will never make more than 10-20 prints of one size of any image. Prices are available on request and I am (arguably) a pretty reasonable guy.
Have camera, will travel...
I am always available for freelance and commissioned work. I am interested in projects that require a "unique perspective".
Laundry service...
If you want to drop it, that is! I live in the Vancouver/Seattle area so if you are in that area and think you might like to get involved in a project by all means send me an email! We may be able help each others portfolios. (sorry guys, thanks, but no thanks!)
Dedication...
I dedicate all my work to the memory of my "Uncle" Eric Bergquist. I miss you my old friend.
Gear Manifest...
The Cameras I list my cameras here, not because I want to endorse any products, but because I have become somewhat attached to them and, well, what the hell they deserve some credit as well. Every picture you see was shot with either my trusty Contax RTS, ST, or Hasselblad 500CM. The lenses are of course, all by Carl Ziess: 18, 25, 50, 85mm for the 35's and 50, 80 and 150mm for the 2 1/4.
The Films The film that I use depends on everything and anything from my mood to the weather. I primarily use Tri-X and alternatively HP5+ and Neopan 400. I also use the T-Max films when I think detail will enhance the image but I find it finnicky and not my favourite. I also use HIE Infrared but not so much since it became the Alanis Morrisette of the film world.( I have an absolutley incredible recipe that gets fine grain out of infrared film which I will gladly share with anyone who sends me e-mail! )
The Prints Even more varied than the films I am constantly experimenting with different papers and developers. I am a complete slob in the darkroom. I keep the process as inexact as possible unlike some others who are completely anal about it. This is more a product of my impatience than anything else. But I do cut a clean print, if I do say!
Thanks to...
