July 2005

OK, everyone gets one early this time as I am taking some time off for a much
needed break.
Black Hot Sun: I do this sometimes - I start to build without any idea of where
I hope to end up.No sound in my head, no visual.I had a client who really wanted
something different - a Black Beauty look and feel, but not the cheap black
chrome versions you can buy on eBay for $100. I had some very old beaded and
flanged brass shells in my shop and I sent one off for a unique plating process.
I was looking for something that was similar to that chalky black you see on
vintage Ludwig Black Beauties. And that's pretty much what I got. So, to be
clear - this IS NOT black chrome. The shell is obviously beaded and it does have
flanged hoops. Originally it was my plan to weight the top and bottom flanges
making it a "heavy shell", however I didn't get to it on this one.
Still the sound was what I had been working towards: fat, very focused and begging
for a batter head with a few hundred miles of brush work on it. This one shipped
fitted with die-cast hoops, the new all-metal R Class throw off, Hypervent I
and a 10 lug configuration as spec'd by the owner. Please note - I do not make
these as a regular item.

Lissa Wales Fund

Lissa Wales is far more than an outstanding photographer who has
dedicated her entire career to the drumming industry. She is also a kind soul
who never hesitated to help others, and a dear friend to many of us. For the
past two years she has fiercely battled acute myelogenous leukemia, which the
deadliest form of that particular cancer, and now finds herself on the verge
of a crucial bone marrow transplant. Lissa will spend months in the hospital
and expects her recovery to take practically a year. In the meantime, she is
unable to work. As a freelance photographer, Lissa has lived off of revenue
generated from photo assignments which have been replaced in recent months
by doctor visits and long hospital stays. While her insurance covers the better
part of her mounting medical bills, she faces other expenses that she simply
can't pay. Thats why we created the Lissa Wales Fund, so that Lissa can
concentrate all of her energy on recovery without worrying about paying bills.
We have donated $1,000 to season the pot, and invite you to contribute whatever
you can at this pivotal moment. Whether you can spare $20 or $20,000, we ask
that you respond as quickly as possible. Make checks payable to Lissa Wales
Fund, and send them to DRUM! Magazine, 395 East Taylor St., Suite 215, San Jose,
CA 95112 Attn: Connie Hood. Wire transfer funds to Wells Fargo Account
#7140221818, account name "Enter Music Publishing Inc. Lissa Wales Fund,"
ABA routing number 121-000-248. Those who know Lissa have been touched by her
humanity. But even those that never met her have been touched by her artistry.
Take it from us we've never known anybody who deserves help more than
Lissa does right now.

Dunnett Classic R Class throw off UPDATE!
Dunnett Classic owners looking for news regarding upgrades please
stand by...
Delta, BC. - After almost 5 years in the making Dunnett Classic drums is pleased
to announce the official release of the R Class snare throw-off. According to
designer Ronn Dunnett, the R class throw-off sets a new standard for reliability,
simplicity and advanced ergonomics. The throw- off features a release lever
that can be rotated 180 degrees relative to the drum shell. This allows the
drummer to position the lever for easy access regardless of the position of
the drum. A friction tension system prevents the lever from movements caused
by vibrations. Its a very simple and effective design. Its
quiet, smooth and very solid - I guarantee no one will be breaking any
of these..
The R Class throw-off features a unique mounting channel which allows it to
be retrofit to any drum with a vertical hole pattern of 1.75 or less (including
plastic and aluminum strainer models). The R Class throw-off also features all-metal
die-cast construction for maximum durability and is currently available in chrome.
Black chrome and brass finishes will be available later this year. Registered
owners of 2005 Dunnett Classic snare drums are eligible for a no charge upgrade
to the R Class throw-off. Registered owners of 2004 and earlier models can upgrade
to the R Class for nominal charge. World-wide retail distribution has been
assigned to Kaman. Drum manufacturers and OEMs can purchase the R
Class throw-off directly from Dunnett.

You know what? It STILL in my iPod! It's an album that just continues to grow
on me. I predict this os going to be one very successful album.
This is a release that has been greatly anticipated and it's due out any day
now. I had the opportunity to hear a few tracks in advance of the release date
and all I can say is 'Yep - this is porn alright!'. Kurt Dahle used a Dunnett-made
prototype stainless steel kit - AKA the Bonham anniversary kit. All wide open
with some very ingenious micing techniques to get drums sounds that you really
have to hear to believe. I can't say enuogh about this band, their drummer or
this album - just go and buy it!

Dunnett Classic is almost synonymous with metal snare drums, but I've been putting
a lot of effort into creating some very different wood shells over the past
6 months. It's obvious what makes a metal Dunnett Classic stand apart from other
metal snare drums, but what could one possibly to re-invent the wood shell?
In a word: sculpting. I have been doing a great deal of prototyping MonoPly®
shells that have "shaped" reinforcement rings that substantially reduce
the weight of the shell giving the drum more tonal depth and range, something
I will be discussing in depth in the coming months (another reason to add a
bookmark now!). This is a 7" x 14" MonoPly® Cocobolo finished
in high gloss lacquer. It features die cast hoops, R Class all-metal die cast
throw off and of course, Hypervent I.
