October 2005

October - September 2005

What an incredibly busy month it has been! So much that I have had to double up on the drums of the month and bring you a 2-for-1 special. In keeping with the season, October's drum of the month is this autumn coloured Titanium beauty finished in translucent copper. The colour coating does not effect the sound of the drum - wouldn't want to do anything to change a snare that sounds this great. The Dunnett Classic Titanium - winner of the 2005 DRUM! magazine reader's choice award for snare drum of the year.

Speaking of fall...and leaves...a remarkable 6.5" x 14" stainless steel Classic fitted with florete appliques. I've only produced a handful of drums that feature this original design as a unique alternative to engraving. The appliques were hand-carved to form the dies, then the florettes were actually minted - like a coin - from copper.

The 2006 Eric A. Bergquist Award

This year's Bergquist award was another tough decision and there is no shortage quality of quality educators deserving recognition. If you've ever been to NAMM, or PAS or any of the other myriad of trade shows or drumming events, more likely than not Mr. Jim Chapin was there too with a set of sticks and a practise pad ready and willing to teach any drummer lucky enough to be there. With a career in teaching that spans over 50 years Jim was an easy choice for this coveted award. Congratulations Jim!

The 9th Annual Hollywood Custom & Vintage Drum Show

This was my 7th trip to the Hollywood Custom & Vintage Drum Show in LA and it stands out as one of the best shows ever. Far toom uch for me to discuss in detail here, so I invite you to visit the drumsmith.com pictorial by clicking on the image of me and one of the lovely raffle ticket grrls!

Studio Works

Begining November 1st I'll be in the studio assisting my friend Jeff Campitelli and Mike Fraser (Aerosmith) as they lay drums tracks for a new Satriani album.

Kurt Dahle just finished the first leg of the New Pornographers "Twin Cinemas" tour.

Introducing the R Class Rail Mount system (U.S. and foreign patents pending)

Being a drummer always presents some unique challenges - I think you probably know what I'm talking about. It makes us all innovators. Sometimes a simple idea can make all the difference - and that's how this little innovation came about. The R Class rail mount system is designed to allow you to do several things: allow you securely attach a tom, cymbal arm or any accesory to your converted floor tom-to-bass drum. Used with an isolation mount it also allows you to mount a tom, cymbal or accessory to your virgin bass drum without drilling. The R Class rail mount system provides solid, secure support for anything you might want to add onto a bass drum. The R Class Rail Mount is currently available direct for $49 plus shipping. The kit includes the rail, bone clamp and L arm.

FORE!

In August I flew to LA to take part in the West Coast Drum Center's 1st Annual Charity golf tournament. It was a fantastic event and very sucessful with proceeds going to Mr. Holland's Opus foundation. It was also a great opportunity to spend some time hangin' with the brothers and sisters from all areas of the drum community. Again, a picture paints 1000 words so please have a look at the pictorial by clicking on the image - BTW, that's my crazy foursome: Stewart Copeland, Gene Provencio, event organizer Darren Carr and yours truly.
