June 2008

Oh my - a long time without an update...that's gotta be news itself! The truth is...a long story! No, the truth is that at some point (and I can't say for certain when) Dunnett Classic Drums - AKA the little engine that could - somehow evolved into a bullet train. Everything has been moving so fast, it really is overwhelming at times and those times have been coming with greater frequency. Please accept this explanation as the highest compliment I can pay back to everyone who has supported my little endeavor - I am humbled by this success. And believe me when I say success hasn't spoiled me, but it sure has tired me out! Anyway, I owe you a few new drums and some news so here we go!

6515MPX 6.5" x 14" MonoPly X ® Teak

All Dunnett Classic snare drums are now available with the new cast Deko lug. The original lug design was done by Todd Rathkamp and was modified for use on Dunnett Classic snare drums. As you can see on this 6.5" x 14 MonoPly X Teak (complete with the very exclusive R logo round badge), they are quite stunning in appearance. The fade you see in the wood is natural, and I'm sorry - this particular drum will remain in my personal collection, but I will be offering a few more like this one.

6514KX - Kore   Wenge / Stainless

For the time being I have suspended production of the Kore models. As beautiful as they look and sound,  I'm just not able to dedicate the time I need to make these. This is a rare, one off prototype. It features a MonoPly X Wenge core section with stainless steel upper and lower sections. The die cast hoops really add the finishing touch to the warm, full bodied richness and power of this drum.

5514CU-A Acid Etched Copper

Since I'm rolling out drums I no longer offer...feast your eyes on one of the last copper models to roll (no pun intended) out of my shop. I have decided to suspend production of the "slow" metals - copper, brass and bronze in favour of the George Way offerings in those materials (more on this at www.georgewaydrums.ca). This shell was treated with my usual flesh-disolving caustic cocktail of etching acids that seared their mark on this 5.5 x 14 snare. This model may still be available through Just Drums in Germany.

The George H. Way Drum Company

Update!

George Way Custom "AERO" Ultralight Spun Aluminum model

If I haven't made it clear previously , let me do so now : George Way drums ARE designed and manufactured by me! I put as much quality into each and every George Way snare drum as I do each and every Dunnett Classic.

2008 Whirled Tour

Over the past 6 months I have made my way to many trade expos, drum shows and DCD dealers shops around the world including London, Frankfurt, Milan, Florence, Rome and Chicago. I could write a book about all those travels or I could just take you there with these links!

The DaVinci Project

Among the many projects that are going on in the background, my work on my new bass drum pedal (working title DaVinci) is nearing completion of the design phase. Suffice it to say this project has absorbed countless hourts of time I might otherwise have spent, oh, maybe updating the Dunnett web site. I knew going in that this would be a major project, but it just really needed to get done. I have never really been happy with any of the pedal offerings on the market - there's only so much black krinkle coat you can look at. Virtually every pedal pedal design on the market is merely a reconfiguration of the one sitting beside it on a music store shelf. Time to break a few (more) rules! While I am trying my best to have something for Winter NAMM 2009, I can't promise. Whenever the pedal is released, it will be worth the wait - THAT I can promise.

Project "JT-3"

I am currently working on a new series of limited edition drums that I have dubbed Project "JT-3". It is one of the first projects Dunnett Classic has been involved in that involves...wait for it...guitars. Expect a preview at this years 11th Annual Hollywood Custom & Vintage Drum show.

The Stanton Moore snare drum

I've been working with my pal Stanton on what was to be his first "signature" snare drum. Things don't always develop as one might expect, but this time it was for the better - its no longer just a "signature" snare drum...Stanton will be one of only 2 artists I know of who have started their own drum company. I'm glad Dunnett Classic has a role to play in making this happen, but rest assured, this drum is 100% Stanton. Stanton is looking at a late fall release, possibly at the 2009 Winter NAMM show. The Stanton Moore snare drum ( I call it the Stantone ) will be distributed by Bosphorus cymbals.

In my ipod OK, this is a good one!
